A flurry of snowies

This morning the fog hung over the area making any sort of venture out pointless. We had intended to go and look for a Hawk Owl, none have been very close ro us this winter and so we would have to go on a bit of a trip to pay our respects to one. This got shelved rather when we popped down to the St-Clet area to enjoy the Snow Geese, just as soon as the sun shone. We’d seen fields full of the beauties and were scanning around when we came across a young male Snowy Owl, not that unusual for the area. Nearby was a second bird, nice. We made our way towards St-Clet along Ste-Julie when we found yet another Snowy, a male this time and with a lighty speckled head. This demanded scoping and so we had a good look at the bird, then we picked up another, then another and it was clear that we had hit a staging day. I had been lucky enough to chance on a staging day a few years ago and had seen 15 birds in one afternoon, this day was to better that. After realising what was happening we resolved to do the full circuit and managed an excellent 20, yes 20 birds in the general area of Ste-Julie and Ste-Marie.

In addition to the owls we saw 150 Snow Buntngs, a Rough-legged Hawk and I have no idea how many Snow Geese but lots. Photo ops were not great so here are a couple of digiscoped efforts.
